What this tool cannot do
  • It estimates your position against the poverty level — it is not a quote and not an eligibility determination
  • The applicable-percentage schedule is set annually by federal law and can change between plan years
  • It uses the guidelines for the 48 contiguous states; Alaska and Hawaii have separate figures
  • It does not know your county’s benchmark plan premium, which determines the actual credit amount
  • Only the Marketplace can determine your eligibility — this is orientation, not an answer

Calculators are for orientation. Before you act on a number, have a licensed person check it against your actual situation — that part is free.

Questions about this tool

What counts as household income?

The Marketplace uses modified adjusted gross income for you and everyone in your tax household who is required to file. It includes wages, self-employment income, taxable interest and dividends, capital gains, retirement distributions and untaxed Social Security benefits. It is a projection for the coverage year, not last year’s number.

What are cost-sharing reductions?

They are a second, separate form of assistance that lowers your deductible, copays and out-of-pocket maximum. They apply only if you enroll in a Silver plan and your income falls below the applicable threshold. Households eligible for them who choose Bronze to save on premium give up the entire benefit.

What if my income changes during the year?

Report it to the Marketplace as soon as you know. Credits are advanced based on your projection and reconciled on your tax return, so an unreported increase can create a repayment at filing and an unreported decrease means you overpaid all year.
